Socialize Golden Retriever Puppies at an Early Age or They May Find it Difficult to Lead a Normal Life Later

Bringing home a new puppy for the first time is an exciting event for the family. Golden Retriever puppies are little balls of adorable fur and you and family will be spellbound by the new entrant in your home. But for the puppy it could turn out to be an overwhelming experience, if not handled correctly.

Over-awed: Separation from their mother and littermates, who they have been so close to in the initial weeks; and stepping out into the world for the first time, is a whole new experience for Golden Retriever puppies.

  • The puppy is now with people who seem so alien and different from its own little world. It has been placed into a new environment where everyone is vying for its attention. This can be a little unnerving at first for Golden Retriever puppies.
  • Most Golden Retriever puppies love and thrive on attention, but in the first few days they can be slightly overawed by all the unfamiliar and excessive attention.

Socialization and acclimatization: They are virtually untrained at this point and their interaction with people has been quite limited and probably sporadic in the initial weeks of their life. This is a stage when socialization should begin in right earnest.

  • Socializing is the process of introducing and acclimatizing your puppy to other people and animals.
  • This process has to start at an early age when your puppy is at an impressionable age and learning new things
  • Socialization exposes a puppy from an early stage to various aspects of its environment - different types of people, situations, animals, birds, places, shopping areas, etc
  • Proper socialization ensures that your puppy develops the right attitude towards people and other animals or pets that the puppy is likely to come across in your home and in its immediate neighborhood.

At times there is tendency among dog owners to be protective towards their pet and they put off socialization. It is just not advisable to wait.

Pitfalls of delaying socialization: The importance socializating Golden Retriever puppies at an early age cannot be stressed enough. Unless you start early, the process of adjusting and living in a real world environment will not be entirely balanced and normal in your Golden puppy.

  • They can become fearful of certain situations
  • They can shy away from people
  • They may not be able to perform to their potential at canine competitions or events where you want them to shine
  • They may not be as well-adjusted and well-behaved as you would like a household pet to be. According to experts if Golden Retriever puppies are not socialized properly, then as grown dogs they can display an unnecessarily aggressive attitude towards people they come across. In such a situation it may be a bit difficult for you to attempt behavior modification.
