How to Train Your Puppy to Do Anything Including Housebreaking in 8 Easy Steps

Learning how to train your puppy is not defined by any formal framework or prescribed method. There are no set rules. You can improvise and unleash your creativity as you go along.

Expect good and bad times during training, but training can be a fun and rewarding experience as you watch a puppy learn and develop. I know it can be taxing and frustrating at times, when you have to repeat yourself, accidents happen and the house becomes a mess despite your attempts at housebreaking your pet. But this is all part of the fun of learning how to train your puppy.

Have a Plan: Even before you bring your puppy home, organize your thoughts and make a mental note of all the little things you want your new puppy to learn. The main goal is for your golden retriever puppy to blend into your home and environment with minimal fuss.

Be Calm: Learning how to train your puppy should be done in a calm state of mind and should be approached as an exercise in patience. You cannot yell at your Golden at any point, and you have to be extremely tolerant while housebreaking a puppy.

Bonding as Well as Training: Basic training has to be punctuated with friendly bonding sessions. Create a bond even as you teach. Try to establish a friendly and fun relationship with your new pet. Play games with your puppy. Goldens thrive on attention and love to be engaged and active. You have to indulge your puppy in some fun activities several times a day such as playing ’fetch’ or catching a Frisbee.

Praise, Reward and Encourage: Praise your puppy and you will be rewarded with a genuine response and attempt to absorb whatever it is you are trying to teach. In general, Goldens are eager to please their owners and respond well in an encouraging atmosphere.

Make learning Fun: Goldens like learning new things. They love being around people and love to pick up new tricks. Training a household pet should not be done in an intimidating or confrontational manner. How to train your puppy should not be like a boot camp. It is just a puppy you are trying to housebreak. Smile, laugh when your pet does something funny, keep your tone light but at the same time be firm and persist till your pet understands your message.

Don’t Give in to Whining: It might sound cruel and heartless but it is an essential part of training. Puppies will start whining during crate training and when they have to sleep alone in their crate. But don’t give in. Otherwise your dog will whine every time it doesn’t like something and you will be held ransom by its helpless expression or the whining sound and will be unable to achieve the objectives of the training.

Don’t Over Reach: Don’t attempt to achieve too much, too quickly. Slow and steady steps are the right way to how to train your puppy.

  • It will take many weeks before your Golden learns the basics of living in your home.
  • Any attempt to rush through training will result in tiring yourself out, getting unnecessarily worked up and tense. Your puppy will learn only at the pace at which its mental capacity permits. Be patient while learning how to train your puppy.
